Store Manager Assigned Duties
The duties included in a job description for a store manager will vary depending on the type of business being managed. The basic job duties include:
- Merchandising
- Managing Operations
- Bookkeeping
- Advertising
A store manager job description requiring all of these things goes well beyond what many people think of when they consider this type of position. There is the impression that store managers just sit in the back office barking orders to lower employees, but that is not the case in most stores. The store manager job description extends itself to a lot of bookwork in the office, but it also requires a lot of interaction with customers and employees.
At the very least, a store manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of business, such as ensuring cashiers are doing their jobs, the shelves are getting stocked, and customer questions are answered. The manager is often responsible for ensuring that doors get locked and the safety of the business is always properly watched. In smaller stores without separate security, the manager may also be expected to control theft from
employees as well as customers.
Store managers are also expected to handle troublesome customers and disruptions in the store. Some stores may be able to afford security, but many leave controlling problems to the store manager. If someone is unsatisfied with service from other employees, the manager must step in to handle the conflict efficiently.
In some store manager positions, the duties will extend beyond controlling the daily operations of the store. The manager’s job description may also include purchasing merchandise for the store without breaking a budget, and arranging that merchandise in an attractive manner in the store. They may also be in charge of doing the bookkeeping to make sure the store is operating at a profit. They are usually in charge of overseeing cash register drawers to make sure cashiers are not slipping money into their pockets.
In some cases, a store manager job description may also include promoting the store or handling local advertisements. This is often handled by regional managers, but not always.
Essential Store Manager Skills
In order to be an efficient store manager, you should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You must be able to remain calm in a crisis and conflict management should be your specialty. You cannot be someone who loses their cool easily, as you will be unable to remain composed and rational when dealing with angry or unreasonable employees or customers.
A store manager may also need accounting, marketing, or other skills related to extended duties required in the job description for some stores. A general understanding of how retail stores work and all of the products and services sold in the store is important as well.
Education and Training for Store Manager Positions
There are some store managers who get their positions by moving up the chain from lower positions. These managers may not have any formal education beyond a high school diploma or GED. Yet, most stores hiring from without the company will require at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field or five plus years of direct management experience. Some stores may require both five or more years of experience and a degree.
What Do Store Managers Earn?
Potential earnings correlate to the duties listed on the job description. A store manager job description that includes only basic supervision of daily operations and overseeing of employees will generally pay less than a job description that also includes merchandising, bookkeeping, marketing and promotional work. The more work the manager is in charge of overseeing, the more the salary should increase.
Many store manager job descriptions will offer a salary of at least 80K a year. Some can go well beyond this, and some may come out less if fewer duties are required. The salary offered can also depend on the amount of experience a new manager has, and whether they need on the job training or not. Someone being promoted from within may not demand the salary that someone from without the company would demand, so they could end up getting paid less.
The store manager position is a job with many variables. The exact salary has to be determined based on all factors from the experience and education of the new manager, the company and all of the duties required in the job description.
